Sidebar improvement (only 1 sidebar)
Reducing 2 layer sidebar to 1 | Quicker Access to Apps | easier navigation between Spaces | easily moving apps across spaces | improving quick app adding before you select where to add |
How: We are thinking of removing Sections / Spaces and Folders, making everything a folder with apps in them. You can also have folder > folder > Folder > App to support your existing Section > Space > Folder > App structure and your structure will automatically be converted to this if we do it.
Thanks to many feedback during calls, in the community and in these posts, we thought we'd make some improvements to the sidebar 🫶
Here is a glimpse on how it looks like 🙌
I'd love feedback on this as we'd be iterating it for a bit before finally committing to it!

We are soon starting to work on liftUI 2.0 🙌
Goal is to deliver it until the end of August.
Make working with apps more flexible
Opening apps side by side from different spaces
Move app across spaces with ease
Quickly create an app in private area before choosing a specific location to move it to
Make navigation faster and easier
Simplify usage and make better use of screen real estate

We are designing a Quick Actions menu, where you can open in every space to quickly reach your favourites & private notes as well as personal todos 💪
Fantastic feedback - thank you!

I like that you will be able to access everything from the main toolbar instead of needing to enter into a second toolbar to access any of your apps. And I don’t mind the conversion to folder and nested folders for the hierarchy but I also wouldn’t mind keeping the top level as a space or project, like this:
Projects/Spaces > Folder > Folder > App
For many people, they will only have one workspace and will use the top level to separate out the different projects/client spaces/etc. Not a big deal because you can likely make it work the same way, just where my head goes. And while I think it’s a good idea to put everything on one main toolbar, I kind of like the idea of being able to enter a project and focus on that project/space without the clutter of all the other projects/spaces that are inevitably going to accumulate on the main toolbar. Maybe there could be an option added to the 3 dot menu where you opt to “open project/space/folder” that would give you a similar experience to your current section views where a second toolbar is created that just contains all the folders and apps inside that project/space/folder. With that and a central main toolbar, I think you could improve quick access issues for when people are jumping around a bit and don’t want to enter a section everytime to find an app but also give the option to create a cleaner work environment for times when your focus is entirely on one project/space/folder.
I also see that you added the chat button to the toolbar. Does that mean that it will now open as one of the split screens or continue to be a kind of dynamic secondary sidebar coming off the ride side? I can see potential benefits to both and maybe both could be options eventually. I don’t mind having the chat come off the side as it does today because it allows you to check messages and keep conversations going with your team without disrupting what you’re working on.
I also think there should be something similar to the current chat sidebar for your private notes and a running todo list. Was originally thinking just a couple more buttons next to the chat button on the top right, one for notes and one for todos, like this (professionally made on whiteboard app haha!):
I often have things come to mind that I need to do or ideas I want to jot down and it is nice not to need to go navigate to a different page or find the right space/section/app. Just a running list of todos that I can go to later and either move/assign to one of my todo apps or mark as complete. The notes could look similar to the chat window, with the different pages listed on the left and the contents of the page selected shown on the right side.
Just my two cents, keep up the good work fellas!

For this we will create a "Move to" function, this might help it out!

would we be able to also allow todo's be moved between spaces?

Yes, there is technically a way to do this now!
Sync an app to the Space, open 2 todo apps side by side, move todo from one app to the other and delete the synced app. 🙌
